Radioactive Waste Management

At TRF, we design and manufacture specific solutions for the safe management of radioactive waste in healthcare and research environments. Through modular engineering, continuous monitoring, and installation and maintenance services, these solutions minimize operational exposure and simplify traceability from waste generation to final disposal.

Liquid radioactive waste management

The DTS System is a comprehensive solution designed by TRF to safely and efficiently manage liquid radioactive waste generated in the field of Nuclear Medicine. This system is particularly relevant in the treatment of patients with radioactive isotopes used in metabolic therapies and theranostics, such as I-131 or Lu-177. In addition, it offers solutions for shorter half-life isotopes, such as F-18 and Tc-99m, used in diagnostic Nuclear Medicine.

  • The system is made of stainless steel:

- AISI 316 for parts in contact with liquids.

- AISI 304 for parts without direct contact with liquids.

  • Self-shielded tanks with lead.
  • Controller with a very intuitive touch screen.
  • Real-time filling level (L and %) and activity (MBq) measurements.
  • System connected to toilets (TRF Hot Toilet), which allows enabling or disabling their flushing.
  • Remote access that allows monitoring and management of the system at any time from any point in the facility.
  • Compact and very reliable system. Fully adaptable to the space available in your Service.
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of waste.
  • Technology for reducing water consumption, since the volume of water in the toilet flush is adjustable and is disabled in case of incidents or maximum filling of the system.
  • IoT integration with devices such as:

- Radiation detectors to monitor the dose produced by the patient.

- Video surveillance cameras.

  • Option to integrate with a hospital's BMS.
  • Remote management of the system with high levels of security.
  • User access control.
  • Different security systems such as:

- Irregular filling detection.

- Leak detection.

- Redundant critical components.

- Incident notification by email.

Turnkey solutions, from design with implementation plans (specific to each installation) to acceptance tests.

Maintenance service, both remote and on-site.

  • Environmental care through ecological and safe management of liquid radioactive waste.
  • Radiological protection for professionals and the public.
  • Remote management for efficient and safe operation.
  • DTS-P. System operation in parallel mode. Any of the tanks can be for filling and decay. More versatile, it provides a greater safety margin.
  • DTS-S. System operation in series mode. A single filling tank and assisted pumping of the waste to transfer it to the decay tanks. Very compact and reliable.
  • DTS-T. Designed specifically for facilities with limited space and/or low patient volume. Available in 3 standard sizes and with a plug & play philosophy. It is also highly recommended for the management of short half-life radioactive waste (Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine).

In addition, we offer upgrades to old systems, converting them into modern and efficient systems without the need for large investments.

Components of the DTS System

TRF Main Board

Designed to manage liquid radioactive waste with specialized hardware and software. It offers: user management with different permissions, alarm and event logging, remote maintenance and monitoring, and control of all hydraulic, electrical, and electronic components of the system.

TRF Decay Tank

Manufactured in stainless steel with lead shielding and accessories that ensure efficient and safe handling, complying with the strictest radiological safety standards.

TRF Hot Toilet

Special separation toilet, made of stainless steel, designed to collect and separate radioactive and non-radioactive waste. Its adjustable flushing system, indicator lights (green/red), and water calibration for urine flushing minimize the volume of stored waste, ensuring controlled and safe use.

TRF Hot Sink

Special stainless steel sink, connected to the DTS system, for the safe disposal of liquid radioactive and non-radioactive waste. Includes usage indicators (red/green) to ensure safety.

TRF HT Box

Controller for radioactive waste collection equipment (TRF Hot Toilet, TRF Hot Sink), designed to manage the operation of these devices and their communication with the DTS System.

TRF DTS Gate

Device to connect additional equipment to the system, such as sinks or emergency showers, allowing the safe collection of liquid waste.

Solid radioactive waste management

Our shielded containers, made of high-strength stainless steel, are the ideal solution for the safe storage of solid radioactive waste generated in Nuclear Medicine environments.

  • High Resistance Material: Stainless steel construction that guarantees durability and robustness.
  • Personalization: Dimensions and shielding levels adjusted to the specific needs of each client.
  • Shielded Doors: Front and/or top door options for greater versatility.
  • Available Accessories: Include shelves and sinks, according to customer requirements.

We also offer shielded carts and bins, designed for the temporary storage of solid radioactive waste in a safe and efficient manner.

These containers are designed to comply with the highest radiological safety standards, providing specialized technicians with a reliable, safe, and customizable solution for the handling of solid radioactive waste in the field of Nuclear Medicine.
